India win 5th Test Match Against England at London

During one of the most intensified and fiercely contested Test series in the recent past, India drew the five-match series against England 2-2, following an extraordinary fightback culminating in a nail-biting victory in the fifth Test at The Oval. The Indian team, led by new captain Shubman Gill, exemplified resilience and character during the series – a quality the team had displayed throughout the tour.

India entered the series with a relatively inexperienced team and a captain who was leading a full Test series for the first time. Despite losing the first Test, the team consistently improved and Gill persisted with the batting responsibilities, himself leading from the front. He consistently delivered satisfactory performances throughout the series and was able to ‘carry’ India through a gritty time – including a historic double hundred that proved doubters wrong and confirmed his status as a member of the next generation of Indian greats.

The turning point occurred in the fourth Test at Manchester, with India, more than 300 runs behind, mounting a thrilling fight-back. A hundred run partnership, composing two amazing innings, from Gill, KL Rahul and contributions from the middle order subsequently followed. The Indian bowlers then held their nerve to tie the Test, to keep the series alive for the last Test. The fifth Test at The Oval, produced a classic.

At various times England had the upper hand, especially on the final day, chasing a modest target with wickets in hand. When the fire-cracker had finished, India’s pace attack headed by the velastrophic Mohammed Siraj had jibed England’s top order. Siraj’s five-wicket haul, including the crucial last one for a six run victory, was accomplished in front of a stunned London audience. The shows of celebration afterwards was proof of how much the victory meant to the Indian visitors. Post-match, captain Shubman Gill emphasized a strong belief and commitment from the team. Gill noted the collective energy and attitude brought by the players this morning in what had looked a bleak situation, noting the group had “feeling pretty confident” heading into the final morning of the series.

Gill was very clear that the draw against a strong England team was not a fluke, and was based on everyone coming together and cooperating throughout the series.  The drawn series will be remembered not only for the volatility and drama, but will also be seen as a way to mark a new chapter in Indian Test cricket. Gill’s first big job as captain has ended as he would have wanted it, with a hard earned draw against a tough England team in their backyard. For Indian fans, this was more than a drawn Test series- it was a declaration of intent and a glimpse of what the future may look like.
