Historically, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru vs Punjab Kings timeline has been packed with high-scoring contests, nail-biting finishes, and the occasional magical moment of individual brilliance. Both teams have made a reputation for their unpredictable results against each other, with explosive batting line-ups and match-winning bowlers. Their competition has seen many highs and lows over the years, from IPL’s early years – when Punjab would perform favorably against RCB – to RCB’s dramatic comeback victories at later stages.

2008 to 2015: Tough Battles Begin

  • PBKS vs RCB, IPL 2008- Both teams played the first IPL match at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, on 5th May 2008. KXIP bowled Royal Challengers all out and won the 25th match of the IPL by 6 wickets. Bangalore set KXIP a target of 127 runs after being given a chance to bat first in 20 overs. KXIP chased easily the target for RCB and scored 127 for the loss of 4 wickets in 18.2 overs. The bowling of Sreesanth (2 wickets in 4 overs) and Piyush Chawla (3 wickets in 4 overs) helped KXIP win the match convincingly at the RCB home ground. Sreesanth was given the Player of the Match award for his great bowling performance. 
  • KXIP once again demonstrated their cricketing prowess and a strong team in the 34th match of the very first IPL season, as they beat the Bengaluru team by 9 wickets. Shaun Marsh demonstrated who the top-order batter is and scored a half-century with 74 off 51 to win the Man of the Match award for his best performance in the game.
  • PBKS vs RCB, IPL 2009- In the 11th match of the IPL season held at Kingsmead in Durban on 24th April, 2009, Punjab again bested Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Drian Plantations Venue by 7 wickets. Kings XI Punjab played in 19 overs and scored 173/3. Royal Challengers Bangalore also played in 20 overs, but they only scored 168/9. Ravi Bopara was awarded Player of the Match for scoring the innings for the match with a score of 84 runs in just 59 balls. RCB and PBKS played against each other again in the 24th match of the 2009 IPL season; this time, RCB had a victory over KXIP by 8 runs in Durban. RCB scored 145 runs in 20 overs and lost 9 wickets at the end of their innings. But from the Punjab side, Yuvraj Singh was scoring a half-century with 50 runs, but fell short of the RCB total by 8 runs. 
  • PBKS vs RCB, IPL 2010- The seventh IPL match took place at the home of Royal Challengers Bangalore, and RCB won the match by 8 wickets. RCB chased down Punjab Kings 204/2 in 18.5 overs. The runs came courtesy of a strong partnership between Jacques Kallis (89) and Robin Uthappa (51), delivering RBK the victory. Even in a losing effort, Ravi Bopara and Manvinder Bisla delivered fine performances, with 77 & 75 runs respectively. Later in Barabati Stadium, Cuttack, RCB defeated the Punjab team by 6 wickets during Match 31 of the season.
  • PBKS vs RCB, IPL 2011- The Bengaluru team once again cleaned up the KXIP and won the 47th match of the season by 85 runs. Not only did the RCB team feel proud to win the match in their own backyard, the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, but they won the match in front of their home crowd as well. RCB scored 205/6 in 20 overs. Chris Gayle stole the show by scoring a century with 107 runs in 49 balls, and he was also the player of the match. 
  • Kings XI Punjab got a clean sweep of the RCB team in the 63rd match of the season and won by 111 runs. Adam Gilchrist, KXIP captain, laid some groundwork with a century of his own, scoring 106 runs off 55 balls. KXIP had some momentum with Piyush Chawla 4 for 17, and Ryan Harris 3 for 28.
  • PBKS vs RCB, IPL 2012- In the 25th match of the season, Royal Challengers Bangalore won handily against Kings XI Punjab by 5 wickets. Punjab posted a decent 163/6, which RCB easily surpassed, finishing at 166/5. Chris Gayle was the showstopper for the day, going on to thump a destructive 87 runs off 56 balls.
  • Next, in the 44th match of the season, on May 2, 2012, in Bengaluru, Kings XI Punjab wasted no time seeking revenge. After chasing 159 set by RCB (158/5), Punjab held their nerves to win the match by 4 wickets with 1 ball remaining. Azhar Mahmood was awarded Player of the Match for his 3 wickets for 20 runs.
  • Punjab vs Bangalore, IPL 2013- The 51st match of IPL 2013 was held at Chandigarh on 6th May, 2013, when KXIP had a thumping victory by 6 wickets over the Bangalore team. Royal Challengers Bangalore scored 190/3 in 20 overs and Punjab scored 194/4 in 18 overs. KXIP accounted for the victory through the great batting display by David Miller, who scored an astonishing century, 101 out of 38, during the match. Later in the 63rd match of the IPL 2012 season, Punjab was victorious over the Bengaluru team by 7 wickets. Adam Gilchrist and Azhar Mahmood performed a valiant inning in the match.  
  • Punjab vs Bangalore, IPL 2014- Kings XI Punjab was victorious over Royal Challengers Bangalore in winning the 31st match of the IPL 2014 season by 32 runs. This is a proud win for Punjab, as they got a win on the arguably home ground of RCB at M Chinnaswamy Stadium. KXIP was allowed to bat first and give RCB a goal of 199 runs in 20 overs. When RCB came in to bat, they scored 166/9 in a loss in 20 overs.
  • PBKS vs RCB, IPL 2015- The 40th match of IPL season 2015 was played at M Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru, on 6th May, 2015. Royal Challengers Bangalore played at their home ground and defeated the Punjab team by a massive margin of 138 runs. KXIP registered their all-time low of 88 runs in just 13.4 overs in their innings and lost the match. Chris Gayle displayed his match-winning batting class in the game and scored a remarkable innings of 117 off 57, and was awarded the Player of the Match.

2016 to Recent Encounters

  • PBKS vs RCB, IPL 2016- In match number 39 of IPL season 2016, RCB managed to win the match and also the hearts of cricket lovers like us by just 1 run against the Punjab team. It was a nail-biter for RCB as they lost 6 wickets in making their 175 runs in 20 overs. AB de Villiers’ 64 in just 35 balls was a highlight of the match, as was Shane Watson’s bowling – 2 wickets in 4 overs, and he won the Player of the Match award. 
  • Match 50 was one of the most exciting matches played in the season between the PBKS and RCB. Yet again, RCB beat KXIP, and in this instance by 82 runs (D/L method). Virat Kohli was a standout player for the RCB team. He scored a century with 113 runs in 50 balls and was awarded Player of the Match for his flamboyant batting.
  • PBKS vs RCB, IPL 2017- Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) beat the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in a closely fought match in the eighth match of the IPL season in Indore.  KXIP gave a real beating to RCB and the match ended with Punjab winning by 8 wickets. And so the Punjab secured 150/2 in 14.3 overs. Overall, strong bowling and catching of the Punjab team contributed heavily in the win of the team.  Even though AB de Villiers from Bangalore played a superb innings in this match, scoring 89 off 46 in this match. 
  • Later on in the 43rd match of the season, KXIP played RCB again and beat them by 19 runs.  This was a great win for the Punjab team because they crushed Bangalore at their home ground, M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Sandeep Sharma stood up as the Shining Star of the evening, taking 3 wickets of the RCB team.  He was so impressive with his bowling that he got the Man of the Match award.
  • PBKS vs RCB, IPL 2018- The eighth match of the season was being played on Bangalore’s home turf, M Chinnaswamy Stadium on 13th April, 2018. RCB crushed Punjab by 4 wickets on Punjab’s home ground. KXIP batted first, and after a target of 156 runs, RCB came to bat and happily chased down Punjab’s target at 159/6 in 19.3 overs. The fabulous bowlers on the RCB team took the most wickets for their Punjab team. 
  • Bengaluru beat Punjab by 10 wickets in the season’s 48th match. KXIP gave a target of only 89 runs to RCB, and RCB chased down everything they needed with 92 runs in 8 overs without losing a wicket. Virat Kohli (48 off 28) and Parthiv Patel (40 off 22) played great innings in the game and contributed greatly to their team’s victory. 
  • PBKS vs RCB, IPL 2019- PBKS vs RCB, IPL 2019 – Once again, Royal Challengers Bengaluru obliterated Kings XI Punjab in the IPL season 2019. They triumphed in both matches, the first one being the 28th match of the season, where RCB secured an easy victory by 8 wickets, and the second one was the 42nd match, where RCB triumphed by 17 runs. Important players of the victorious RCB included such names as Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, and Umesh Yadav, who showed their excellent batting and bowling skills accordingly. We have to highlight the great innings that Chris Gayle played for KXIP in the twenty-eighth match of the season, where he scored 99 runs, even though they lost the match.  
  • PBKS vs RCB, IPL 2020 – The sixth match was sponsored by the International ground and was played on 24th September, 2020, where a dominating KXIP team defeated the Bangalore side by 97 runs. KXIP made a claim and stated that they are going to be a (more than) relevant team to compete with in the competition representing the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Under KL Rahul’s captaincy, they amassed 206 runs in an entertaining 20 overs with the loss of just 3 wickets, with KL Rahul scoring an incredible century with 132 runs off 69 deliveries, and winning the Player of the Match trophy in the process.
  • PBKS vs RCB, IPL 2021- In the 26th match of the season, Punjab Kings triumphed over the RCB and picked up a victory by 34 runs. Punjab Kings scored 179/5 in 20 overs. KL Rahul accomplished an innings in the match with 91 off 57. But Harpreet Brar captured 3 wickets of the Bangalore team and received the Man of the Match award. Subsequently, in the 48th match of the season, Royal Challengers Bangalore got their revenge on the Punjab and picked up their victory by 6 runs at the Sharjah Cricket Ground.
  • PBKS vs RCB, IPL 2022- In the 3rd match of the season at Navi Mumbai, Punjab Kings produced an exhilarating chase to defeat Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 5 wickets with an over to spare, after RCB scored a robust 205/2. Punjab Kings scored 208/5 to win the match. Odean Smith was explosive with a quick-fire 25 off just 8 balls and was awarded Player of the Match.
  • Later in the 60th match at Brabourne Stadium, PBKS produced an even more accomplished performance, dominating RCB by 54 runs. PBKS scored 209 runs for 9 wickets while RCB finished with 155 runs for 9 wickets. Jonny Bairstow was simply scintillating with 66 off 29 balls and was again awarded Player of the Match.
  • PBKS vs RCB, IPL 2023- PBKS vs RCB, IPL 2023- The Royal Challengers Bangalore defeated the Punjab Kings by 24 runs in the 27th match of IPL season 2023. RCB scored 174/4 in 20 overs. RCB took the match due to the majestic partnership of Virat Kohli (59 off 47) and Faf (84 off 56). However, Mohammed Siraj also provided the best bowling performance on the RCB side by taking 4 wickets of the Punjab team.  
  • PBKS vs RCB, IPL 2024- The fifty-eighth match of the season was held at Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium, Dharamsala on 9th May, 2024. In this match, RCB once again proved their strong gameplay and team spirit by winning over Punjab by 60 runs. This was one of the highlighted matches of the 2024 season. Virat Kohli and Rajat Patidhar provided the match with phenomenal batting skills by scoring half-centuries with 92 and 55 runs respectively.
  • PBKS vs RCB, IPL 2025- During the IPL season 2025, PBKS and RCB faced off in a Qualifying final match, and RCB came out on top while winning that match by 8 wickets after PBKS only managed to score 106 runs in just ten overs. RCB bowlers Josh Hazlewood and Suyash Sharma put in a commendable performance to take 3 wickets each from the Punjab team. Suyash Sharma won the Man of the Match award for his amazing bowling. Moving forward, RCB holds the trophy of IPL season 2025 by winning the final match over PBKS by just 6 runs.
